Indiana Driver Safety Program
Requirements & Features
In Indiana, drivers who commit two or more traffic violations resulting in convictions within a 12-month period are required to complete and pass a Driver Safety Program (DSP) approved by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
For drivers under the age of 18, the requirement to complete a DSP applies if they are convicted of two or more traffic violations, involved in two or more accidents, or a combination of both within a 12-month period.
Once the BMV is notified of your traffic convictions or incidents, you will receive a notice requiring you to complete an approved Driver Safety Program within 90 days. Failure to complete the course within this timeframe will result in the suspension of your driving privileges.
Additionally, if you accumulate 18 or more active points on your driving record within two years, your license may be suspended, and you may be required to take a DSP.
Upon successful completion of an Indiana BMV-approved Driver Safety Program, a 4-point credit will be applied to your driving record. If your license is already suspended, completing the course may help reinstate your driving privileges.
All Indiana drivers are eligible to take a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program and receive a 4-point credit, even if not required to do so. If you’ve received a traffic citation and have points added to your record, you don’t need to wait for BMV notification—you may register and complete an approved course voluntarily.
You are eligible to receive this 4-point credit once every three years, regardless of whether the course is taken voluntarily or as a requirement.
